Commercial Roofing Issues - Beyond the Webinar

Host Rich Grimshaw joins Chris Scallion and Matt Hodge for this week’s aftershow exploring three unique commercial roofing case studies. Chris starts with a study that shows even an average summer rainfall and thunderstorm system can be disastrous for a commercial roof with a host of other bad conditions.  Matt’s first study looks at a roof that appeared to “blowing away” even though there were no wind events – it turns out that the underlying problem could be traced back to school lunch. Juan takes us through a study of a manufactured home with a suspected sinkhole near the driveway. He also explains what a pattern of leaning trees can tell us. Jeff Coyne takes us through some of the tools and remediation efforts used in sinkhole studies, and you can catch a glimpse of him scuba diving in a sinkhole filled with groundwater.

Materials Testing - Beyond the Webinar

Rich Grimshaw is back this week with Don Mikel and Stephanie Adams from Donan’s Component Testing Lab. You’ll be impressed with their ability to explain some really complex concepts. Stephanie walks us through the use of a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and mapping to investigate a dezincification failure of a washing machine hose, and Don shows us how the composition findings from the use of Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) help support his findings of stress corrosion cracking in an aluminum valve failure.
